I go out to the garage this afternoon for this
Yep… You guessed it the freezer wasn’t shut tight… With the temps in the high 90’s and I am sure hotter in the garage, we had thawing going on… Although my hubby wanted the freezer thawed because the top shelf gets so much icy build up
I am pretty sure he didn’t have this in mind…
I ended up throwing away a turkey, ribs, ground turkey, and misc junk food.
And bringing in the house refrigerator TWO whole chickens and a bag of chicken breast {as they were on the shelf with all that ice, so they were thawed…. but still cold.
So now what the heck am I going to do with all this chicken?? Any ideas?? I don’t about you all, but with grocery prices as they are, it killed me to toss out all that food! But I wasn’t about to serve it to my family and hope nobody got sick… I am totally bummed and thought this is something I should take pics of and blog about, then decided against it, then thought no… I will feel better blogging about it…. So now you all get to read my woes….

Sorry to hear about that Jenny! But you know, when life gives you “lemons”, make “lemonade”! Why don’t you throw an impromtu barbecue and invite the neighborhood?! Or cook a bunch of chicken casseroles and then freeze them, or surprise someone with dinner?
…HEY, DON’T YOU HAVE SOME NEW CHICKEN RECIPES IN YOUR COOKBOOK? LOL I’M SORRY THIS HAPPENED TO YOU…WE’VE BEEN THROUGH IT TOO. AT LEAST IT WASN’T A TOTAL LOSS, AND YOU’LL JUST LOTS OF CHICKEN FOR A FEW DAYS. COULD BE WORSE! RYAN’S CHINESE CHICKEN SALAD IS ALWAYS YUMMY. MY BOYS WOULD CHEER FOR IT!
Something similar but less severe happened like this to our freezer last year.. but I caught it early on so I did not have to throw anything out.. I saw water near our freezer which is also in the garage…. so now we lock it every time to make sure it is really shut!! Maybe you can trade someone chicken for some other meat!
what a shame! but I have to say it has also happened to us.
About the chicken, if you don’t want it today, I would just cook it all, either bake it or stew in in a big pot with water and maybe some seasonings if you have some,
then just take it all off the bones and skin it, then dice or shred it and freeze it for future meals like chicken tacos, chicken pot pie, chicken salad.
It is safe to refreeze meat if you cook it before refreezing.
All I know is now I will be periodically checking my garage appliance! AND if this should happen to me, I have read some GREAT ideas on what to do with defrosted chicken. Thanks for the blog and I’m sorry to hear of your loss of food! Now I’m thinking chicken tacos for a future dinner yummmm…. (I really can’t put it into my two-week menu since it is not planned for…lol!)
I’m thinking COLD chicken recipes on this 100 degree day. Chicken salad, chicken sandwhiches, chicken “tuna”
Poor Jen! Of course you have to heat up some appliance to cook it so you could BBQ too!
